When can I expect to start using Aircell broadband?
We’re launching in early 2008. If you have a favorite airline, let them know you’d like to have them offer Aircell’s broadband service. (Click here to receive notice of availability)
Why can’t other companies also provide this type of broadband service?
Obviously, connecting to a plane moving 600 miles an hour, flying up to 7 miles above the Earth’s surface, requires some special technical capability. Aircell’s patented airborne technology was demonstrated last year with resounding success. In addition, Aircell won the exclusive rights to use the FCC’s air-to-ground communications frequencies in an auction in 2006. |
Since it’s a ground-based service, where will it work?
Initially, the Aircell ground network will blanket the US, so coast-to-coast service will be available to all domestic airlines. Coverage will be extended to the rest of North America, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, shortly thereafter. |
How does Aircell’s exclusive broadband service work?
The Aircell broadband system is based on the latest-generation (3G) cellular technology, with a network of specialized cell sites on the ground communicating with aircraft in flight. An access point on the airplane will connect to your wireless device and route that communication to one of our ground sites. |
What type of devices will work with Aircell broadband?
Wireless devices that use the 802.11b or 802.11g Wi-Fi standard, including laptops, PDA’s, BlackBerrys® and portable gaming systems, will work with our service. |
