Aircell Broadband: How it Works |
Aircell takes a combination of existing technologies and packages them with a customized and highly durable inflight server to create a media and communications platform specifically made for airplanes. This technology allows us to provide passengers with services that they never have been able to use and experience before.
How Do We Do It?
Aircell uses a network of wireless antenna sites across the U.S. to establish a link with the airplane. A Wi-Fi hotspot, placed within the cabin of the airplane, receives the link and allows passengers to connect to the Internet at DSL quality speeds.

In Cabin Network:
Standard Wi-Fi
The in-cabin Wi-Fi works the same as it would in an office or home. All passengers have to do is turn on their Wi-Fi enabled laptop or handheld mobile device, open a browser, and login or register on Aircell’s Welcome page.
In the future, Aircell may offer cellular services that will enable passengers to SMS, MMS, email, and browse the Internet using a standard cell phone. While voice service is technically possible, Aircell believes in keeping a quiet, peaceful atmosphere in the cabin and will not offer it as a service.

Air-To-Ground Network
Aircell’s broadband service is based on an established telecommunications technology called CDMA EVDO, a high-speed system already in use by a number of ground-based wireless carriers. This patented airborne technology uses the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) air-to-ground communications frequencies to which Aircell has exclusive rights.

First-Rate Passenger Experience
Aircell’s nationwide ground network uses the latest in routing and management technology available in the market today. This new network is dedicated to providing the passenger best possible experience. We have highly sophisticated self-diagnostic and device monitoring equipment making sure that all components are operating, as they should. Our network and customer support folks are ready day and night if assistance is needed.
